Former Tusker FC, Leopards coach Matano settling fine in Tanzania

Robert Matano is settling well into his new role as head coach of Fountain Gate FC and says he is slowly working his magic as he aims to improve a leaking defence that has been a problem for the club.
Currently placed seventh in the Tanzanian top-flight league, they were founded as Diamond Trust Bank Football Club in 2010, changed their name to Singida Big Stars FC in 2023, and later to Fountain Gate FC in 2024.
Matano took charge of Fountain Gate on January 10, 2025, after joining from Sofapaka.
He replaced Mohamed Muya, who was sacked on December 29. Since his appointment, he has overseen seven league matches, winning two, drawing two, and losing three.
Under Muya, the team played 16 league matches, winning six, drawing two, and losing eight.
Matano has confessed that he is not satisfied with his team’s defensive shape, forcing him to make numerous tactical changes in an attempt to create consistency at the back.
The changes notwithstanding, Matano is appreciative of the fact that some problems need time to resolve.
By conceding 40 goals in 23 matches, an average of nearly two goals a game, Matano's boys have the worst defensive record in the league alongside KenGold FC, and Matano knows it's not an easy fix.
“This is a difficulty that will not be overcome overnight. That is why we returned to the training field to work on it. If we can’t eradicate the problem, we can at least reduce it," Matano told the Tanzanian outlet Daily News.
"I’m also gradually implementing my tactical ideas based on the players available."
"One of the positives is our midfield. The players in that area have developed good chemistry, and they are creating opportunities for the forwards. That gives me hope for the upcoming matches," he added.
Fountain Gate take on Singida Black Stars on April 2 in their next league match, where they will be looking to pick up three valuable points.
